The purpose of a lawful marriage is to build a well-ordered Muslim society and ensure the continuation of human progeny, while fostering mutual love, compassion, and tranquility between spouses, particularly when they are compatible in their spiritual and material circumstances. However, when significant differences exist between husband and wife regarding worldview, values, fundamental beliefs, and standards of life, an important question arises: can such a marriage truly fulfill the objectives for which it was instituted? Such differences may negatively affect the upbringing, education, and character development of children in the future. For this reason, Islam not only emphasizes religious compatibility between spouses but also gives importance to kafā'ah (compatibility or suitability) within the same faith. Although Islamic law permits Muslim men to marry women from among the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitāb), contemporary jurists have attached certain conditions to such marriages. This article presents a comparative study of the relevant juristic rulings and examines the rationale behind the imposition of these conditions.
